When Is The Best Time To Trek Upper Dolpo?
The best time to trek Upper Dolpo differs from one trekker to another – it depends on the trekker’s preference, interest, and activities. But if you see from the surface, the best time for this trek is Spring and autumn. Here is why these seasons are considered favorable for trekking around the Upper Dolpo region:
Spring Season (March to May)
Spring is a colorful season – it boasts the beauty of the environment around the Dolpo region. Although the Upper Dolpo region is barren and features desert-like landscapes, the routes that take you to this place are worth walking. The trees change their leaves, allowing greenery to their surroundings while the wildflowers of the forest go into full bloom, which makes the view from this region magnificent. So, if you are a photographer going on this trek, what can be a better model than the colorful forest and vibrant environment?
Besides, the primary reason for trekking in Spring is its moderate weather and climate. The moderate temperature makes it easy to trek during the daytime as well. Similarly, the dry landscapes and routes allow you to travel through the uphill trail safely. One of the plus points you get during the Spring is less rainfall, which is positive in many ways for trekkers.
Autumn Season (September to November)
Autumn is the season of festivals in Nepal. Major festivals like Dashain and Tihar fall under this time, and what can be a better option to groom into Nepalese culture and tradition than being involved in these celebrations? While embarking on the Upper Dolpo Trek, trekkers can celebrate these festivals, giving you deep insights into Nepalese people, society, culture, beliefs, and traditions.
Besides festivals and celebrations, the Autumn season mostly parallels the characteristics of the Spring season in terms of weather and climate. Trekkers can experience mild temperatures with less humidity and rainfall. Similarly, they can avoid natural hazards such as storms, landslides, and snowfall, as there are fewer chances of rainfall and snowfall during autumn. The moderate sun with clear blue skies lets you view the stunning landscapes.
Attractions of the Upper Dolpo Region
Shey-Phoksundo Lake
Shey Phoksundo Lake is the deepest lake in Nepal, located in the Dolpo region of Nepal. It is surrounded by towering peaks and rocky cliffs, which gets reflected in its crystal-clear turquoise waters. It is located at 3,611 meters above sea level and is considered holy by Buddhist devotees.
Shey Gompa
If you are a Buddhist devotee and are looking forward to going to the Upper Dolpo Trek, then Shey Gompa is what you should not miss. It is a remote Buddhist Monastery located on a rocky hill, which offers stunning views of the surroundings, including mountain peaks and Shey-Phoksundo Lake. The gompa features numerous intricate artworks, statues, prayer flags, prayer wheels, chortens, and mani walls, reflecting the significance of Buddhism around the region. It is located at 4200 meters above sea level and was built in the 11th century – it is also considered the spiritual heart of Upper Dolpa.
Nangdala La Pass
To those who are adventure seekers, Nangdala La Pass is a great destination that puts them to the test. Located at 5,350 meters above sea level, it is one of the high-altitude locations in the Dolpo region. Not only towering altitude, but it is also known for its landmark, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Trekking across the pass is a challenging but rewarding experience, with steep ascents and descents that require stamina and determination.
Jomsom
While returning from the Upper Dolpo region, trekkers will make a route through Jomsom. During this time, they get to explore Jomsom, the windiest city in Nepal, located in the Kali Gandaki River Valley. Jomsom does not need any explanation as it is acknowledged for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. Located at 2700 meters above sea level, it is one of the most popular viewpoints to have the views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and other mountains from the Annapurna Range. The traditional villages and Buddhist Monasteries in Jomsom are some attractions, while the local cuisine and hospitality are top-notch.
Preparation And Trekking Strategy
The Upper Dolpo Trek is a moderately difficult trekking package in Nepal. Reaching the Upper Dolpo region and involving in the activities there requires strategic preparation. So we are here with the recommended preparation details trekkers need before embarking on this trek.
Permits
To enter through the Dolpo region, we have to obtain special permits. They can be bought from the Nepal Tourism Board after paying certain fees. The required licenses for this trek are:
- Upper Dolpo Restricted permit costs $500USD per person
- Special trekking permits costs $20 USD for a week per person for lower Dolpo
- Shey Phoksundo’s national park entrance fee cost 3000 rupees per person.
Physical And Mental Preparation
Physical preparation is a must since the Upper Dolpo Trek has a 27 Days itinerary that includes extensive hikes through the rugged and rocky landscapes of the Dolpa district. You must have an endurance capacity, stamina, and energy to walk for hours daily. We recommend having prior trekking experience and exposure to high altitudes before attempting this trek. Trekkers are suggested to work out on their physical strength by practicing cardio, training their lungs, and hitting gym workouts.
Besides, mental preparation is crucial for this trek. One thing is sure: you will get exhausted with hours of walking through the uneven trails of the Himalayan region. At this point, many trekkers believe they need help to continue and complete the trek. However, they are advised to stay positive and acclimatize to push themselves to their destination. Do not panic during emergencies; always listen to your guide’s instructions to stay safe.
What To Pack?
Depending on the time of the year, activities, itinerary, and preferences, trekkers are advised to pack the following items for this trek:
- Warm thermal clothing, including windproof/waterproof jackets, hats, gloves, and socks
- Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support.
- Lightweight and long-sleeved shirts, pants, and shorts.
- Sleeping bag rated for below-zero temperatures.
