The trail conditions can vary within the month. During early December, the trails can be dry or have little snow. However, snowfall can become more likely, especially at high elevation in late December.

The snow and ice in upper ridge areas may make parts of the trails slippery which means you have to watch your step. But with proper preparation, trekking in this month is manageable.

The beautiful snowy scenery adds magic to the experience making the journey memorable for all trekking enthusiasts who wish to join winter trekking and witness the snowy wonderland.

December is a good time to enjoy the incredible mountain views. This winter month has dry weather, low humidity, and clear skies, treating trekkers to amazing mountain views of Annapurna South, Machhapuchree, Hiunchuli, Mardi Himal and other surrounding peaks.

As you move up towards High Camp and Base Camp of Mardi Himal, the mountain views become clearer. Mountains covered with fresh white snow look ethereal. There can be some snowfall in the surrounding hills which lets trekkers witness the beauty of a winter wonderland.

The sunrises and sunsets make the mountains look orange and pink and are especially fascinating to witness.

Trail Conditions during the Mardi Himal in December

Depending on elevation at which you decide to hike, the conditions of the trekking trail could vary immensely. During the initial section, when trekking through forested areas and villages, you will traverse well maintained and dry paths.

Once you reach a higher elevation, you will find yourself in an open landscape where the effects of winter can be felt. Low temperatures may cause ice patches to form. Also, there are usually strong winds blowing at High Camp; hence, the exposed areas tend to be very cold.

The ascent to Upper Viewpoint is usually the most challenging part of the trekking journey in December. In this section, fresh snowfall and icy patches can make some parts of the trail slippery to walk on. So, you must be careful when climbing on steeper sections and take enough time to rest and also walk using trekking poles to increase safety.

    Perks of December Trekking

    Clear Mountain Views

Among the major highlights of Mardi Himal trekking in the month of December are the wonderful mountain views that you get to see. Winter is characterized by low winds and clear sky which make the mountains look sharp.

While trekking higher up, distinct views of snowy mountains can be seen along the way. The mountain views, especially in the early morning, are always bright and sharp, letting you immerse yourself in stunning scenery.

    Fewer Crowds

In December, fewer people undertake the Mardi Himal Trek compared to that of spring or autumn seasons. This allows for walking at a leisurely pace in a tranquil atmosphere along the way. Popular viewpoints feel more peaceful. Here, you will get plenty of time to stop, take photographs and enjoy the scenery.

The serene atmosphere can make the trek more immersive especially if you prefer to trek when there are fewer crowds.

    Peaceful Teahouse Experience

The quieter trails during the month of December offer a tranquil atmosphere at the teahouses. Without the presence of many trekkers, the dining areas are not so congested and you will have enough time to interact with the teahouse/ lodge owners, locals, learn about local culture in detail and also receive personalized service.

    Photography Opportunities

The month of December offers great opportunities to photograph the enchanting landscapes of Mardi Himal. Winter clear skies create amazing contrast with the snow-capped mountains, while the low winter sun gives a warm glow during sunrise and sunset.

Other things worth photographing in addition to the mountains are frost covered forests, snowy paths, mountain ranges and villages. Always keep your camera or mobile phone handy throughout the journey for photography opportunities.

Trekking Mardi Himal in December: Challenges

    mardi himal trek

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderate but the conditions in December may make it more challenging. It is not just because of the distance or steep trail itself but the low temperatures, snow, ice and wind of December can be both physically and mentally challenging.

The main challenge of December is the low temperature. At night, temperatures at higher altitudes can drop far below freezing. Also, the cold winter wind is even colder.

High altitude is another notable challenge. You will be at different high altitudes during this trek. Though the Mardi Himal trek is not high as other treks in Nepal, some trekkers who are not used to the high altitude can experience the symptoms of altitude sickness because of rapid elevation gain.

Winter daylight hours being shorter is yet another factor that should be taken into consideration. So, an early start is very important to enjoy exploration, make the most of the available daylight hours and also to reach the teahouse safely and comfortably.

The winter weather can make some parts of the trail more challenging. The fog and snow can instantly affect the visibility, leading to navigation difficulties. Also, when fresh snow covers the trail, the route can be harder to identify.

Also, if the snowfall is too heavy the Upper viewpoints can be temporarily inaccessible. So, trekkers need to be prepared for slower progress and possible changes in their itinerary.

Although there are notable challenges in this season, well prepared trekkers can undertake this trek in December. This month requires more preparation and caution. However, with right winter clothes and equipment and by taking precautions, trekkers will get to experience the solitude on the trail, enjoy clear sights of spectacular mountain peaks and also complete the trek safely in December.

Mardi Himal Trek December: Accommodation Facilities

The accommodation during Mardi Himal is mainly arranged at the teahouses and lodges. The winter months get few visitors, but many teahouses of the Annapurna region still stay operational.

Most teahouses have simple twin-sharing rooms with beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. There is usually no heating in the rooms, which makes them extremely cold overnight, especially at high altitudes. So, a proper sleeping bag is a necessity when trekking in December.

Also, the facilities become simpler as you go up to higher altitudes. So, you must be mentally prepared to adjust to that.

The dining room becomes the most comfortable place in teahouses. Teahouse owners usually light the wood-burning or gas stove in the evening. So, trekkers will have a chance to warm up and eat dinner after their tough day on the trail. Bathrooms are simple. In most places, bathrooms are available on a shared basis.

Most low-altitude villages usually have enough lodging options. However, at higher elevation, there can be limited operating teahouses because of extreme winter cold. So, inquiring about availability beforehand is necessary.

If you book the Mardi Himal trek package with us, we will look into the availability and reserve rooms in advance so that a secure place is guaranteed to rest after long day on the trail.

    Food and Drinking Water

The food served in teahouses includes simple but satisfying food items like dal bhat, noodles, thukpa, fried rice, vegetable soup, Tibetan bread, chowmein, pasta, eggs, and different potato dishes. Also, on your part, please carry energy snacks to have between meals for quick energy.

Remaining well-hydrated is as important as having nutrient rich meals. You may not feel thirsty due to cold temperatures but you will definitely be losing fluids while walking in the mountains trails. So, drinking water frequently is essential.

There are teahouses along the way where you can buy boiled water. For a December trek, you may carry an insulated bottle and refill the hot water at different teahouses along the trail.

Maintaining balanced diet and drinking enough water can help you keep your energy levels up. These simple actions make you well prepared to handle the challenges of trekking.

Tips for a Safe Mardi Himal Trek in December

    • Check the weather forecast before beginning the ascent.
    • Begin trekking early. Early starts give more daylight and help you reach higher points in time before any change in weather occurs in the afternoon.
    • Wear proper footwear. For this trek waterproof boots with good traction are required.
    • Make sure to pack trekking poles as they are necessary and very helpful in icy and snowy areas.
    • Stay warm. Always wear an additional layer if you get cold.
    • Drink enough water. Drink frequently even if you do not feel thirsty.
    • Be careful about high altitude. In case of headaches, dizziness, nausea, and other signs of altitude sickness, inform your guide and never continue to go up without consulting your guide first. If symptoms do not get better head down to lower elevations.
    • Have flexibility in your schedule. Winter weather is unpredictable, and an additional day may prove to be useful for your trekking.
